Huntsman is a global manufacturer and marketer of differentiated chemicals. Its operating companies manufacture products for a variety of global industries, including chemicals, plastics, automotive, aviation, textiles, footwear, paints and coatings, construction, technology, agriculture, health care, detergent, personal care, furniture, appliances and packaging.
Originally known for pioneering innovations in packaging and, later, for rapid and integrated growth in petrochemicals, Huntsman today has more than 12,000 employees and operates from multiple locations worldwide. The company had 2008 revenues exceeding US $10 billion.
Message from the Founder and Chairman Jon M. Huntsman
We have been most fortunate to build a company of this magnitude and feel it is our duty to give back to society. Through our humanitarian initiatives, we have been able to provide food and housing to the hungry and homeless around the world; fund education for those who otherwise would not have had a chance to attend school; and, perhaps most importantly, establish and provide on-going funding for the Huntsman Cancer Institute in the quest to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.
Customer applications that benefit health and the environment
MDI, a key polyurethanes raw material, is a highly effective adhesive used in the production of bonded products from wood. Composite wood products result in less de-forestation (by permitting the use of young, continuously replanted trees) and can make use of wood that would otherwise be treated as waste. Oriented strand-board (OSB), medium density fiber board (MDF), particle board (PB) and wood insulation fiber board (WIFB) can all be made with MDI, and their use continues to grow, especially in construction and furniture.
While organic cotton is still in the early stage of the product lifecycle, Huntsman is the first company to offer a wide range of dyes and chemicals that qualify for either the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or the Control Union Certifications (CU) standards. In response to growing consumer interest in organic products, Huntsman’s product stewardship experts took the lead in pioneering eco-friendly products for the production of organic cotton.
Water treatment additives made with Huntsman products improve the efficiency of mining ore separation; the processing of textiles; and improve production, recycling, and finishing of paper; reducing waste and saving energy.
In their cured state, Huntsman’s environmentally-friendly epoxy products replace liquid insulation systems base on mineral oil. For example, our products permit the use of cast resin transformers instead of oil-filled transformers in windmills, and fully encapsulated vacuum switchgears instead of oil- or SF6 (a suspected greenhouse gas) insulated products.
Huntsman’s TIOXIDE® TR85 titanium dioxide pigment grade is specifically designed for use in low volatile organic compound (VOC) decorative paints. The pigment provides rapid wetting and dispersion in water-based paints while still providing the high gloss, excellent color and optimum opacity end-users would expect from a solvent-based paint.
A large proportion of the world’s fuel is used to heat or cool buildings. In construction, insulation is an excellent way of lowering energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Polyurethane foam has excellent insulation properties and its main applications include composite panels for roofing and wall cladding; insulation board and block, which can be laminated to a variety of materials or cut to required shapes; insulation for heating or energy transportation pipelines; and a wide range of other technical applications, such as heaters and boilers.
Polyurethane foam is widely used in refrigerators and freezers. It provides essential insulation for the low temperature preservation of food during processing, storage and distribution to the consumer, as well as food conservation in the home. Without these appliances, about 50% of food would spoil before consumption. Polyurethane foam insulation also saves significant amounts of energy in refrigerators and freezers and more than is required for its own production. These appliances can consume up to 30% of total household electricity, so energy efficiency makes a real difference.
Electronics produced by our customers include PROBIMER® 77 (aqueous developable) and PROBIMER® 65 (solvent developable) solder masks, which offer systems that are halogen-free, are optimized for lead-free soldering and conform to the latest Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) standards. Other environmentally-friendly products include LED epoxy encapsulants, PROBELEC® liquid dielectrics and AZYRAL® high performance laminating systems.
Huntsman Pigments aims to ensure that all the co-products that result from the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment are usable, saleable products in their own right. These co-products are typically used in applications that provide environmental or healthy benefits. For example, best selling co-products include ferrous sulphate and ferric sulphate. Ferrous sulphate is used to chemically reduce chromium in cement, which in turn prevents user dermatitis. Ferric sulphate is used as a flocculant to purify both potable and waste water. Huntsman also produces co-products that are used in agricultural applications, such as fertilizers and soil improvers.
Our food additive products preserve the shelf-life of foods, reducing waste, and improve the efficiency of corn derivatives, saving resources.
Lubricant detergent additives improve the effectiveness of lubricants, thus reducing friction and saving fuel, and lengthen the life of the lubricant, so disposal is reduced.
For the Metalworking market, Huntsman has developed SURFONIC® MW-100 vegetable oil emulsifier and DGA® Agent, used to reduce emissions and nitrosamines in metalworking fluids, and features a low vapor pressure.
As components of automotives, polyurethanes save energy by reducing the weight of the materials they replace, without sacrificing benefits such as comfort and safety. Lightweight polyurethane parts are being increasingly used in seating and headrest systems, door panels, shelves, dashboards and a wide range of other interior trim.
